This record consists of two distinct parts: the first features Nick Cave reading four excerpts ... Full Descriptionfrom his William Faulkner-inspired, Southern-gothic novel, AND THE ASS SAW THE ANGEL, while the second is 35 minutes of music commissioned for a stage adaptation of the novel.
Cave's reading is very careful and deliberate, his voice reverberating and very occasionally verging on singing. Each of the read excerpts features minimal backing: the first with a stately, morose piano and harmonica; the second sports a sick, barreling barroom piano; and the third and fourth are less music and more the creepy chattering of rasping metal.
The theater music is mostly instrumental, the only vocals are provided by Katy Beale on "Cosey's Lullaby" and "Beth's Sleepy River." It varies from the fairly straight-forward, if monumentally grim, intonation of tracks like "Sleepy River Piano" and "Sanctum" to the ambient industrial rattle of "Pa's Traps" and the genuinely distressing "Euchrid on the Run," with a stop along the way at sinister gospel.

Ponha de lado as contas para calcular o Índice de Massa Corporal (o resultado da divisão do seu peso em quilos pela sua altura em metros ao quadrado), ou mesmo a balança e vá buscar a fita métrica. O seu perímetro abdominal será um dos mais fiáveis sinais de alarme para o risco de morte prematura, dizem os especialistas num estudo publicado ontem no New England Journal of Medicine que envolveu mais de 350 mil pessoas. Conclusão: Um “pneu” com mais de 120 centímetros num homem e 100 centímetros numa mulher significa que duplicou o risco de morte prematura.O perímetro abdominal já estava claramente associado ao risco de doenças cardiovasculares e diabetes. Agora ficou unido ao perigo de morte. Mesmo que o seu IMC seja normal (entre os 18 e 25) e mesmo que não possa ser considerada uma pessoa obesa, se o seu pneu ultrapassar os 80 centímetros (nos homens) ou os 65 (nas mulheres) comece a preocupar-se, dizem os especialistas. A partir daí, os seus riscos começam a aumentar. Cada cinco centímetros a mais significa um aumento de 17 por cento de risco nos homens e 13 por cento nas mulheres. “O nosso estudo mostra que acumular gordura em excesso na sua cintura pode colocar a sua saúde em risco mesmo se o seu peso for normal baseado no IMC. Não há muitas características no indivíduo que possam aumentar o risco de morte até este ponto, independentemente de fumar ou beber”, refere Elio Riboli, do departamento de Epidemiologia e Saúde Pública do Imperial College London, numa nota de imprensa sobre o projecto. O autor principal do artigo, Tobias Pischon, do Instituto de Nutrição Humana na Alemanha, acrescenta: “A gordura abdominal não é apenas um depósito de energia, mas também liberta substâncias que podem contribuir para o desenvolvimento de doenças crónicas. Esta será a explicação para a ligação”. O estudo também avaliou o rácio entre a cintura e as ancas (dividindo as medidas da cintura pelas da anca) associando-o também ao risco de morte prematura. Tendo como coordenadas os resultados entre 0,78 e 1,10 nos homens e os 0,66 e os 0,98 nas mulheres, cada aumento na ordem dos 0,1 neste rácio foi relacionado com mais 34 por cento de risco de morte prematura nos homens e 24 por cento nas mulheres. Maria Daniel Vaz de Almeida, da Faculdade de Ciências de Nutrição e Alimentação da Universidade do Porto (FCNAUP), sublinha a importância das conclusões dos investigadores num projecto que vai além das já conhecidas associações e trata da ligação entre a perigosa gordura abdominal ao risco de morte prematura. Notando que este é um indicador de risco fácil de medir, a docente aproveita para lembrar que o melhor tratamento para a gordura abdominal é um estilo de vida saudável. Os participantes no estudo, integrado no grande projecto europeu conhecido pela sigla EPIC (European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition), com uma média de 51,5 anos de idade foram acompanhados ao longo de mais de nove anos (mais de 14 mil morreram).
